HTC U11, The high-end phone that lets itself be squeezed

Those who live the dawn of Android cannot ignore that HTC was a much needed company, with products that marked many users and impressive sales in many markets, especially in the United States. But the story got complicated with the evolution of the competition, and frankly, I am one of those who always expects a terminal to put them back on a benchmark.

Is that the HTC U11? I see it complicated, as have improved the high-end phones of companies such as Samsung or LG, or the great level that have taken phones at a lower price such as those made by Huawei, Oppo or OnePlus. But here are the Taiwanese to try again, with quite competent ingredients and a very striking design.

For those who thought that the HTC U Ultra was going to be the high end of the season, and that the next important thing had to be an HTC 11, here are going to take a surprise with the HTC U11. A device superior in characteristics, that improves critical points of the Ultra, and dares with innovations, as it can be the recognition of pressure in the lateral ones.

“Bright” and sturdy design

You can see it in the graphic material that accompanies this news, and it is clearly a continuation of what we offer the Ultra terminals of the house: very colorful – white, black, blue, red and silver – and reflections by a tube in the back. Again glass on all possible sides, joined with aluminum, in what they call Liquid Surface.

The choice makes it a sturdy and lightweight terminal, but I think I like the metallic design of the HTC 10 more. What they cannot boast is the elimination of frames like the LG G6, Mi Mix and Galaxy S8, here does a good job, but still a fairly normal terminal.

As in the Ultra, and following the steps of the iPhone, the headphone connector is charged, so you have to use the USB-C or an adapter, which fortunately comes in the package.

How big is it? As it has a screen of 5.5 inches, which makes it be larger than a HTC 10. Still using the technology Super LCD screen, with a Quad HD resolution.

The physical dimensions are nothing spectacular for this screen size: 153.9 x 75.9 x 7.9 millimeters, weighing 169 grams. There is room for a 3.000mAh battery.

Sense of Side: Edge Sense

Beyond understanding the touch, the HTC phone interprets different levels of pressure on the sides. Possibly its frontal aspect is normal has to do with the technology used in the sides of the phone. The HTC U 11 complies with the IP67 certification, so it has a significant resistance to water

To what we were going, the lateral sensors – lower zone – detect grip, touch and pressure, the software identifies it and can do different things with it. Unlike a touch surface, it works both with gloves, and when wet.

Edge Sense is the part of the system that takes care of this: camera trigger, contextual actions in applications, direct access to something, change volume, etc.

Alexa on the phone

The phone does not close the doors to personal assistants, initially we have access to the two best options: the Google assistant, which is invoked with a “Ok Google”, and a special guest such as Alexa.

The Amazon wizard also wakes up recognizing his name and will be available according to markets. In China the choice is going to be Baidu Duer.

The Android version with which it will be released is Nougat 7.1.

A camera of the best level, according to DxO

The presentation of the camera has been linked to the work of the DxOMark people, who say that their solution scores a score of 90. This is as interesting as advertising, you will have to see what the 12-megapixelsensor is really capable of. Much of the blame for that score may be on your lens with aperture f / 1.7 and stabilization.

I think it is interesting to know that there is a Pro mode with RAW support and in regards to video, we can record in 4K, or 1080p at 120 images per second. HTC says it introduces a 3D audio recording technology called “Acoustic focus” (remember, there are four micros).

The front camera is 16 megapixels, associated with a lens with aperture f 2.0 and an angle of 150 degrees. It has stabilization through an electronic system.

Snapdragon 835 and BoomSound

HTC never had too much trouble getting Qualcomm hardware, and here you have access to the Snapdragon 835, already seen on Galaxy S8, Xiaomi Mi 6, or Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Very well in this regard.

We do not forget the memory, which in the case of RAM is 4GB, while for storage we have 64GB (UFS 2.1). The latter case is expandable by microSD cards up to 2TB. For China there will be a version with 128Gb and 6GB of RAM.

For those who have doubts to say that HTC BoomSound is still present, one of the positive points of the brand is maintained with the intention of having the best stereo sound on phones. They tell us that he has redesigned the system with a larger acoustic camera.

Noise cancellation in headphones – USonic Noise – taking advantage of the microphone of the phone (there are four micros). By the way, HTC seems quite proud of the headphones that will include in the package of purchase.
