It is one of those manufacturers that one could rule out a priori when choosing a mobile. Would be wrong: Huawei has long ago things were not good, but very well, and have again demonstrated a smartphone with which again fight to gain ground in the high – end competed. Today we just introduced the Huawei P9, which joins its larger brother, the Huawei P9 Plus.

The new mobile device of this manufacturer is the successor of a Huawei P8 last year and proved to have practical innovations that added to a very attractive hardware bet. All these virtues give a twist more on the Huawei P9: Attentive, this smartphone will be talking, above all, for its dual camera.

The metal, absolute protagonist design

The new Huawei P9 has a design that is actually very similar to its predecessor. The front is dominated by the 5.2 inch screen has virtually no side frames (only 1.7 mm), although there are pronounced frames at the top and bottom. It is at the top where we find the front camera and flash, plus speaker for calls.

The overall size is almost identical to an iPhone 6s, but with a screen instead of 4.7 inches comes to 5.2, as highlighted makers Huawei at launch. They stressed also that no protrusion on the back for the cameras as it does with the iPhone 6s / Samsung Galaxy Plus or S7.

We have six colors available : ‘ceramic white‘, ‘haze gold, ‘titanium gray‘, ‘mystic silver‘, ‘prestige gold‘ and ‘rose gold‘, which makes it clear that in this area trends also make the choice of Huawei, which also points that pink gold we saw for the first time devices … although Apple will not sell the P9 with that tone.

That front on which the protective glass of the screen is the dominant element is combined with the metal edges and back. As with the P8 corners are rounded, but only slightly. The edges have a small -typical bezel that trend marked by 2.5D- screens by joining with the screen, but they are also rounded and follow the trend that certainly favors a more comfortable grip.

The bottom edge is dominated by the headphone jack -here again the debate on whether to place it in the top- and USB-C connector is one of the important news in their specifications. On the right side are the volume controls both as on-off button which, yes, is separated from that volume, thanks to locate some “blind” each of these physical buttons.

In that design without great revolutions the main innovations are however in the back, where we find a band for the antenna that also inherits from his predecessor, but where above all there are two key elements: its dual camera and fingerprint sensor, that unlike other devices is also a power button but is specifically geared to that purpose. As with the Mate 8, it is a flat slit yes, has a square design, not circular as in this model.

Huawei specifications P9

You may outwardly changes are not as pronounced over the previous generation, but they are in the interior, where the internal specifications speak of a clear commitment components and options for the high range of devices

Huawei have decided to keep the screen of 5.2 inches with 1080p resolution and 500 nits, a bet that reduces battery consumption, an important aid for the autonomy of our device spreading further.

In fact this section shall be reinforced by the new battery of 3,000 mAh, much higher than the 2,680 mAh P8, and will surely spend amply allow day use without our having to be concerned about recharging the device.

The USB-C connector debuts in the Huawei P9 and with it come better transfer speeds and a system of quick charge that will be key to at least partially recharge the battery takes very little time. In half an hour we will have 44% of the battery charged while it will take 110 minutes to fully recharge the battery.

The integrated processor is the Kirin HISILICON 955 of its subsidiary in this field. This micro is a modified version of Kirin 950 already debuted at Huawei Mate 8. That smartphone “the endless battery”, he showed remarkable performance in synthetic benchmarks general purpose thanks to this combination of quad – core Cortex-A53 to 1, 8 GHz and four Cortex-A72 at 2.3 GHz, and here we gain in performance with the Cortex-A72 working at a frequency of 2.5 GHz.

Its GPU Mali T880 900 MHz represents a more relevant comparison to previous SoCs signature change, and although tests with Mate in August proved to be a step below the powerful GPUs integrated Apple A9 and Snapdragon 820 that set the standard in this field. Here, as demonstrated by the analysis of AnandTech few months ago, there is a clear winner: energy efficiency. Everything in this device is designed to maximize battery life, but that does not mean that the Kirin 950 again confirmed as one of the most powerful SoCs of this generation of devices.

The processor is accompanied by 3GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage that can expand to another 128 GB through the microSD slot always welcome. There is a top model with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage that also has that slot, but not available in the European market. There will be a Dual SIM model, but it seems that European markets we can only access the model with a SIM, thanks to which we can also have the microSD slot.

A curiosity: in Huawei have implemented a system file optimization that reduces fragmentation and which they say allows response times in mobile management is reduced by 20%.

The new Huawei P9 has support 4G 18 bands plus 4 – band 2G, 9 – band 3G and support in 217 countries and 1,334 operators. As in previous models, the Nanosim slot with the dedicated to the MicroSD combined, and to improve reception in Huawei have integrated that they believe is the first “virtual antenna triple” that achieves maximum coverage and connection quality throughout moment.

The system of dual cameras Huawei P9

The most striking novelty of this new smartphone Huawei is the dual chamber system that we saw in its Honor 6 Plus. In that model this combination allowed access interesting effects of post-production and refocusing, simulation aperture setting or applying filters of all kinds.

In the analysis of that device it was not too obvious the success with a camera that combined two sensors 8 Mpixels and it took more account to be ready for the next shot. These problems could have been solved with a new system based on the use of two sensors 12 Mpixels, one RGB and one monochrome.

We also have a duo-tone flash and a laser LED autofocus system, but unfortunately has no optical stabilization system although Huawei indicate that thanks to this combination is not required. The sensors feature pixel of 1.25 microns, which allows these sensors collect more light. According Huawei these images can be 200% brighter with a 50% improvement in contrast.

The software developed in collaboration with Leica can have a Pro mode that can be activated with a simple shift left finger. In doing so we can control the ISO or shutter speeds, among other preferences. There is even a mode low depth of field (bokeh) -in fact, an edition of a posterior approach to simulate apertures up to f / 0.95, which will fund these images show very blurry and the object is the front is the one with the entire attention image.

Here the Kirin 950 processor should also be crucial to avoid delays affecting the Honor 6 Plus, and this is inevitably also refer to LG G5 which is also equipped with this type of combination for, among other things, achieve images with a wide angle.

This part has been instrumental collaboration Leica, firma legendary in the field of photography that has already taken his first steps on some devices like the Panasonic CM1 and its successor, the CM10.

Leica again offer its experience to that dual camera it can be squeezed to the maximum, and bring its Summarit Leica lenses with an aperture f / 2.2 and a focal length of 27 mm. Although the proposal is promising, we have to wait to analyze the device to determine if this proposal was or was not a success.
